Beloved ’90s Alabama band’s music, out of print for decades, is finally back
Montgomery's Blues Old Stand, jam-band scene cult faves, have reissued their 1993 debut album, on vinyl for the first time.
During the electric energy of the early-to-mid 1990s, the Montgomery-based group Blues Old Stand was a must-see force, blending high-octane grooves with a distinct Southern soul. Whether it was frontman Dave P. Moore’s fierce harmonica or guitarist John Mark Turner’s signature "electric voodoo," the band was a staple of the Southeast jam-band scene, packing venues from Alabama to South Carolina and sharing stages with icons like Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts and Widespread Panic.
A Long-Awaited Return to Vinyl
Now, over three decades after their 1993 self-titled debut album first arrived on CD, the record is finally back. Reissued as a double-album gatefold set, the package includes the 10 original tracks—such as fan favorites "In This Town" and "Liberate"—alongside two new studio recordings, "Pass the Peace" and "Escape Yo Self," and a 2010 live performance of "Mule." For fans who spent years hunting down rare copies on eBay or paying eye-popping amounts for the out-of-print disc, this release serves as an essential sonic testament to the band’s legacy.
Capturing the Magic
The reissue was championed by executive producer and long-time band associate Stewart Wilbanks, who recalls the band’s live sets as nothing short of "bombastic." Recorded on two-inch analog tape in an Elmore, Alabama home, the original album captured the grit and spontaneity of a group that relied on raw chemistry rather than digital trickery. Moore, reflecting on the process of revisiting the material, notes, "I was able to enjoy it for what it was... even with all the busyness, it’s fun to listen to now."
How to Listen
Physical copies of the new set are currently available through bluesoldstand.com and at the Montgomery-based shop Village Green Records. For digital listeners, the music is now streaming on major platforms including Apple Music and Spotify. With the band’s history echoing through Southeastern Conference schools and beyond, this package offers a fitting return for one of the region’s most enduring cult favorites.
