Southern Company reports $2.5 billion earnings so far in 2026, up 14 percent

Southern Company, the parent organization behind Alabama Power, has announced a strong financial start to 2026. According to a recent release, the energy provider reported $2.5 billion in earnings through June 30, marking a 14 percent increase compared to the $2.2 billion recorded during the same period in 2025.

Quarterly Growth Analysis

The momentum continued into the second quarter of 2026, where the company posted $1.2 billion in earnings. This performance represents a significant 33 percent jump from the $0.9 billion earned in the second quarter of 2025.

Operating revenues for the second quarter landed at $6.98 billion, a slight 0.1 percent increase over the $6.97 billion reported during the same window last year. Looking at the year-to-date figures, operating revenues reached $15.4 billion through June, up 4.2 percent from 2025's $14.7 billion.

Drivers of Success

Southern Company attributes this financial growth to several key factors, including increased customer usage, investments in state-regulated utilities, and higher earnings from equity method investments. Lower income taxes also contributed to the positive results, helping to partially offset the impact of higher interest expenses.

Leadership Perspective

Chris Womack, chairman, president and CEO of Southern Company, noted that these results highlight the company's commitment to its customer-focused strategy. "Across the Southeast, extraordinary economic development momentum and demand for power continue to create meaningful opportunities for the customers and communities we are privileged to serve," Womack said.

Looking forward, Womack emphasized that the company remains dedicated to responsible, long-term planning, with a specific focus on maintaining both rate stability and operational reliability. Currently, Southern Company provides energy to 9 million customers throughout the Southeast and beyond through its network of electric operating companies in three states and natural gas distribution companies in four states.
