Star had near death experience while filming popular TV series: ‘I was gone. I turned gray’
He described his recovery period as “such a gift."
In a candid new interview with The Times of London, Bob Odenkirk is opening up about the harrowing 2021 heart attack that occurred on the set of the hit drama series Better Call Saul. The actor, who was 58 at the time, detailed the frightening moments when he collapsed while filming a Season 6 episode.
A Fight for Survival
Odenkirk described the chaotic scene as coworkers Rhea Seehorn and Patrick Fabian rushed to help him. Because the crew was dispersed across the set, many initially mistook the duo's cries for laughter, creating a dangerous delay in medical intervention. The star noted, "I was gone. I turned gray," recalling that even the on-site medic struggled, having never performed CPR before.
While many near-death experiences are associated with visions or life-reviewing moments, Odenkirk had a different experience. "None of that for me," he shared. "The first memory I have is leaving the hospital a week after I got there."
A New Outlook
Following the medical emergency, which was reportedly caused by a plaque build-up that blocked an artery, Odenkirk has made significant lifestyle changes. He now monitors his health by managing sugar intake and taking a regimen of statins, aspirin, and metoprolol to maintain his blood pressure. Despite the severity of the incident, he views his recovery period as "such a gift," adding that he feels "delighted and engaged" in his life moving forward.
In the days immediately following the health scare, Odenkirk reached out to his supporters to thank his fans for their immense encouragement. Posting on the platform formerly known as Twitter, he expressed, "It’s overwhelming. But I feel the love and it means so much."
