Top 10 box office movies for Memorial Day holiday weekend
Top movies over the holiday weekend, by domestic box office ticket sales, include “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” “Obsession” and “Michael.”
After a seven-year hiatus from the big screen, the Star Wars franchise returned to theaters this Memorial Day weekend. While the latest installment, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, drew healthy crowds, it arrived at a point where industry experts are questioning if the theatrical demand for the galaxy far, far away has cooled.
The Memorial Day Box Office Breakdown
Studio estimates indicate that Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu pulled in $82 million across 4,300 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. By the close of the holiday on Monday, projections suggest the film will reach $102 million domestically and $165 million in global ticket sales. While these figures exceeded opening weekend expectations for the Disney+ spinoff, they remain on the lower end of Disney-era Star Wars box office performances.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's head of marketplace trends, noted that audience reception remains a key factor. "The moviegoers rule," Dergarabedian said. "I think given the audience reaction and the scores that are coming from parents and kids, this is going to be in it for the long haul."
Surprise Hits and Steady Performers
The real standout this weekend was the relationship horror film Obsession. In its second weekend, the Focus Features release saw an impressive 30% jump in ticket sales, grossing $22.4 million from 2,655 theaters. Meanwhile, the Michael Jackson biopic Michael secured the third spot with $20 million, bringing its total haul to $782.4 million.
Elsewhere at the box office, I Love Boosters—a surreal social satire directed by Boots Riley and starring Keke Palmer and Demi Moore—made its debut with a $3.7 million opening.
