‘Truly grateful’: Miss Alabama 2026 Ruby Tilghman ready for exciting year in new home state
The new titleholder talks about pageants, college, community service, music and more. And yes, this UA grad says "Roll Tide!"
Brains, beauty, and a genuine heart for community service—that is the hallmark of the new Miss Alabama 2026, Ruby Tilghman. At 22 years old, the University of Alabama graduate is trading her medical school textbooks for a crown, putting her studies at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine on hold to serve as an ambassador for the state.
A New Voice for Alabama
Though born in Mississippi and raised in Panama City, Florida, Tilghman is no stranger to the Heart of Dixie. During her four years in Tuscaloosa, she captured local titles including Miss University of Alabama and Miss Birmingham. Now, she is ready to embrace her role as the newly crowned Miss Alabama 2026, bringing a fresh, energetic perspective to the position.
Speaking with 205focus.com, Tilghman expressed her deep appreciation for the community she now calls home. "I found that Alabamians care about each other," she said. "They feel a responsibility to their neighbors, and that is inspired by just a mutual respect for each other, a desire to better the lives of the people around them."
A Path Toward Service
Tilghman’s journey into the medical field is driven by personal experience. Diagnosed with a movement disorder at age 12, she faced the reality of limited access to specialized care, often traveling long distances for treatment. As a future primary care physician, she is committed to bridging those gaps, whether in urban centers or rural communities. Her dedication to health and discipline also extends to her platform as Miss Alabama, where she emphasizes personal fitness as a tool for success.
Before heading to the Miss America stage later this year, Tilghman plans to use her time as an ambassador to foster unity. In an era of political polarization, she sees a vital opportunity to make patriotism "palatable" and "a uniting virtue" for her generation.
Behind the Crown
When she isn't preparing for official appearances, you might find Tilghman singing, hiking, or grabbing a bite at her favorite Tuscaloosa spot, FIVE. She credits her time as a musician and her involvement with organizations like the University Fellows Experience with shaping the bold, professional communicator she is today.
Regarding her recent victory, Tilghman remains focused on the bigger picture. She encourages those who question the relevance of pageants to "come watch the competition." For her, the experience has been a transformative, life-changing chapter. "Everything I do this year will be out of sheer gratitude for those experiences and the person that it has made me," she said.
As she prepares to represent Alabama on a national scale, Tilghman invites everyone to witness her commitment to the state's future. Whether she is tackling the Highline Trail at Glacier National Park or meeting with community leaders, her goal remains the same: to be a skillful and accessible ambassador for the people of Alabama.
