Trump endorsement carries John Wahl to Alabama GOP nomination for lieutenant governor

John Wahl, who vaulted into the lieutenant governor race on the final day of qualifying after receiving a high-profile endorsement from Donald Trump this January, successfully secured the Republican nomination for the office on Tuesday.

Wahl, who previously served as the state Republican Party chairman for five years, outlasted Secretary of State Wes Allen in a contest that turned into a heated battle between two candidates vying for the mantle of the party's conservative base. The Associated Press called the race in favor of Wahl at 9:30 p.m.

With ballots tallied from 66 of 67 counties, Wahl claimed victory with 57% of the vote (175,590) compared to Allen's 43% (132,530). Voter participation for the runoff reached 10.6%, a significant drop from the 23% turnout seen during the May 19 primary.

The Road Ahead

Wahl now sets his sights on the November 3 general election, where he will face Democratic nominee and state Rep. Phillip Ensler of Montgomery. The winner of that contest will succeed current Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth, who is wrapping up his second term.

Before stepping down in January to pursue this office, the north Alabama butterfly farmer was elected state party chairman in 2021, winning reelection twice along the way.

Trump’s January endorsement proved critical to the campaign. In a social media post, the former president noted, “John has been with us from the very beginning and has been key to our many Republican Victories in the Great State of Alabama.”

Policy and Conflict

On the trail, Wahl emphasized the economy as his top priority, specifically advocating for the elimination of the state’s 2% sales tax on groceries to provide relief to struggling families and senior citizens. While the lieutenant governor’s role focuses on presiding over the state Senate, Wahl has highlighted the office’s potential to shape policy. His recent tenure as chair of the Alabama Public Library Service board saw him spearhead initiatives to remove books with transgender themes from youth library sections.

His opponent, Wes Allen, campaigned on a long-standing record in Alabama politics, having served as a Pike County probate judge and a member of the Alabama House of Representatives before his 2022 election as Secretary of State. After the loss, Allen expressed pride in his 18-month campaign, stating, “I will continue to work hard as Alabama’s 54th Secretary of State and it is my honor to continue to serve in that role until January, 2027.”

The campaign cycle was marked by tension. In one instance, Allen’s campaign funded a $20,000 legal challenge questioning whether Wahl met constitutional residency requirements, an effort that failed to gain traction with the GOP steering committee.

Throughout his career, Allen has been a vocal conservative, having stopped issuing marriage licenses in 2015 following the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage. He also sponsored legislation to ban gender transition treatments for minors and championed measures to tighten absentee voting regulations.

Wahl originally led the May 19 primary with 41% of the vote.

Meet the Democratic Nominee

Phillip Ensler brings a background in law and policy to the general election. The executive director of the Jewish Federation of Central Alabama, Ensler has served one term in the state House representing a Montgomery district. His experience includes working as a policy advisor for the city of Montgomery, roles at the Alabama Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, and teaching at Robert E. Lee High School via Teach for America.
