Undrafted Alabama cornerback announces his retirement after 8 NFL seasons

From a walk-on at Alabama to an eight-year NFL veteran, Levi Wallace has officially called it a career. On Friday, the former Crimson Tide standout announced his retirement, reflecting on an improbable journey that defied the odds after he went unselected in the NFL Draft.

A Remarkable Path

Wallace shared the news via Instagram, posting a career highlights reel alongside the caption: “Walk-on. Undrafted. 8 years. Retired. Not bad.”

His college tenure was defined by tenacity, climbing from a walk-on role to a starting spot in Alabama’s secondary. He capped off his time in Tuscaloosa in spectacular fashion, starting in the Crimson Tide’s 26-23 overtime victory against Georgia in the 2017 CFP national championship game. He notably held the distinction of being the only defensive starter in that title game who wasn't drafted.

Professional Longevity

Wallace’s professional career began on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad in 2018. He was promoted to the active roster in his 10th game, quickly proving his worth. From that point through the 2021 season, he served as a staple in the Buffalo secondary, missing only four games during the 2020 season due to injury.

Following his Buffalo tenure, Wallace joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent in 2022. He spent his final campaign in 2024 with the Denver Broncos. His most recent stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2025 training camp ended when he was placed on injured reserve, eventually resulting in his release via an injury settlement.

Career Stats and Legacy

Over 96 regular-season NFL games, including 72 starts, Wallace proved he belonged at the highest level. His resume includes 12 interceptions, 333 tackles, 56 passes defensed, seven tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. He also saw action in six postseason games, famously recording a sack during Buffalo’s 17-3 playoff win over the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 16, 2021.
