Williamson 4-star linebacker Ellis McGaskin commits to SEC power

Williamson four-star linebacker Ellis McGaskin has officially decided where he will take his talents at the next level, announcing his commitment to the University of Florida on Saturday afternoon.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, the senior prospect chose the Gators over finalists LSU and Florida State. McGaskin, who was previously committed to Notre Dame, joins a growing list of elite Alabama talent finalizing their college plans.

A Perfect Fit in Gainesville

Williamson head coach Antonio Coleman believes his standout defender is headed to an ideal situation. "I’m excited for him," Coleman said. "I think he will be an absolute stud. Ellis has looked at his top schools and done the research. It looks like Florida will have four guys leaving after this next year and maybe he could come in and get some early playing time as a freshman."

Coach Coleman emphasized that the relationship with the coaching staff was the deciding factor. "Coach Sumrall is a great guy. We’ve known him and developed a great relationship with he and his staff. Ellis loves everything about him and about Florida. I think he and his family feel very comfortable there."

A Proven Leader

McGaskin's trajectory has been impressive since his early days at Williamson. Having started for Coach Coleman since the eighth grade, he has developed into a defensive technician. "He’s a student of the game," Coleman noted. "He can make all the correct checks, all the correct shifts. He’s basically the quarterback of the defense. He knows where everyone is supposed to be and that helps the defense play faster."

His on-field production backs up the praise. During a stellar junior campaign, McGaskin racked up 160 total tackles, 43 assists, four tackles for loss, and four sacks. Beyond his defensive dominance, he contributed 258 rushing yards and four touchdowns, earning first-team Class 5A All-State honors and finalist status for 5A Lineman of the Year.

Rising in the Rankings

Currently ranked as the 16th overall senior recruit in Alabama according to the 247 Composite rankings, McGaskin has been recognized as one of the state's premier players, earning a spot on 205focus.com’s Best in Bama watch list at linebacker.

With his pledge to Florida, McGaskin becomes the 10th player among the state's top 16 recruits to lock in a commitment. Other notable commitments include:
