50 Auburn players fans should know: This USF transfer could bolster the passing game

EDITOR’S NOTE: Between now and the unofficial kickoff to the football preseason at SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is featuring one Auburn football player per day. We continue the series today with tight end Jonathan Echols.

A Physical Mismatch for the Tigers

Jonathan Echols arrived on the Plains as a vital piece of Auburn’s revamped tight end room. As one of 13 players to follow head coach Alex Golesh from South Florida to Auburn, Echols brings significant athletic upside to the roster.

Although his production was limited during the 2025 season, the 6-foot-6, 235-pound athlete possesses the rare physical profile needed for a vertical threat in the passing game. During his two-year stint at USF, he appeared in 12 games and made seven starts. His 2024 campaign was highlighted by a explosive 59-yard touchdown reception against Tulsa.

A Role to Earn

Echols managed 307 snaps last season despite a lower statistical output than teammate Wyatt Sullivan. While a shoulder injury limited his participation throughout spring practice, the coaching staff remains optimistic about his potential to make a splash in the rotation. Though he currently sits behind some of his peers due to missed spring reps, his ability to win in one-on-one and red zone scenarios makes him a critical X-factor.

While Jake Johnson projects as a top option for the upcoming 2026 season, both he and Echols are positioned to earn immediate playing time among the six newcomers at the position. For Echols, the familiarity with Golesh's system provides a foundation for success.

“I already had my belief in trusting them for what, five years now,” Echols said after signing. “What they got going on, what they got building over here is going to be good.”

As preseason camp approaches, the focus shifts to how quickly Echols can translate his athleticism into a consistent role within Golesh’s offensive scheme.
