50 players Alabama fans need to know: This veteran could be the SEC’s best defender

As we march toward the unofficial start of the football season at SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is spotlighting one Alabama standout each day. Today, we turn our attention to defensive playmaker Yhonzae Pierre.

The Evolution of a Pass-Rushing Force

Reflecting on the team's progression during a breakfast in California before the Rose Bowl, Alabama outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson highlighted the significant growth of his star pupil. Robinson noted that Pierre’s decision to fully commit to the details of his craft transformed him from a rotational piece into the undisputed leader of the defensive front.

The numbers from 2025 back that up. Pierre paced the Crimson Tide with eight sacks, distancing himself from the rest of the pack, while no other Alabama player recorded more than four. His impact went beyond the final sack tally as well, with Pro Football Focus crediting him with 45 pressures—nearly double the 24 registered by his next closest teammate.

Aiming for the Top of the SEC

Robinson, who spoke to reporters during the week of the Rose Bowl, praised the defender's mindset. While Pierre was Alabama's primary pass-rushing threat in 2025, he still trails conference benchmarks set by players like Texas' Colin Simmons (12 sacks) and Texas A&M's Cashius Howell (11.5 sacks). However, entering his third year in defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s system and his third year working under Robinson, the stage is set for a breakout campaign.

Given his dramatic improvement from 2024—when he recorded no sacks and only five pressures—Pierre has proven he can level up his game annually. With continuity in the coaching staff and a relentless drive to improve, the potential for Pierre to be recognized as the premier defender in the SEC is well within reach.

As Robinson put it, "The sky’s the limit for him, and I’m excited to see when he’s done here, what that looks like."
