Jax State baseball coach hired away by Mountain West school
Steve Bieser led Gamecocks to Conference USA championship, NCAA regional final in 2026
After a standout 2026 campaign that saw Jacksonville State clinch the Conference USA championship and reach the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional final, head coach Steve Bieser is moving on to a new challenge. Bieser has been hired by Grand Canyon to lead their program as they transition into the Mountain West.
A Legacy of Success at JSU
Bieser leaves Jacksonville State with an impressive 103-74 record amassed over three seasons. His final year in 2026 was particularly dominant, with the Gamecocks finishing 48-15. Under his leadership, JSU secured both the CUSA regular-season and conference tournament titles before a hard-fought exit against Little Rock in the regional championship round.
Stepping Into the Mountain West
The 58-year-old coach arrives at Grand Canyon at a pivotal time, as the Antelopes prepare to officially join the Mountain West conference this summer. Following a 2026 season that saw the team finish 21-30, the school dismissed former coach Gregg Wallis and turned to Bieser to revitalize a program that previously enjoyed NCAA regional appearances in 2021, 2022, and 2024.
The Road Ahead
Bieser brings extensive experience to his new role, holding a career record of 423-327-1 across 14 seasons as a college head coach. A former MLB outfielder, Bieser previously held head coaching positions at Southeast Missouri State from 2013-16 and at Missouri from 2017-23 before taking the reins at JSU. 205focus.com will continue to monitor the impact of this high-profile hiring on the collegiate landscape.
