Investigation Underway in Southwest Birmingham

Birmingham police received reports of a shooting at 7:35 p.m. on the 2400 block of Snavely Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the front yard of a residence, according to Officer De’Rell Freeman. Although she was rushed to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Preliminary investigations suggest the tragedy stemmed from an altercation between an unspecified number of individuals. Authorities have already detained two males and transported them to police headquarters for questioning as detectives work to piece together the evidence.

A Violent Weekend

This weekend's violence follows a chaotic 48-hour period, which included a mass shooting that left two people dead and five others injured. Furthermore, on Friday, a separate confrontation between two men at an extended stay motel proved fatal for one of the parties involved. Read more about that incident here.

Tracking Citywide Homicide Trends

The recent surge in violence arrives at a time when Birmingham police were highlighting a significant decline in homicides compared to previous years. As of Wednesday, police had recorded only 17 homicides for the entirety of 2026—a 50% decrease from 2025 and a 73% drop from 2024. With Saturday’s tragedy, the city’s 2026 homicide total has reached 21.

"Over the past few days, we’ve had homicides, we’ve seen things happen and we do want to emphasize that we are going to continue working to reduce crime," Freeman stated, "and do everything that we can to mitigate any issues in the city of Birmingham."
