1,400 train at new FBI complex in Alabama built as a real-world town: ‘No facility like this’

Huntsville has become home to a revolution in federal training. Since opening its doors in February 2025, the FBI’s Kinetic Cyber Range at Redstone Arsenal has processed more than 1,400 students, according to an agency report released on June 9.

A Realistic Training Ground

This expansive 22,000-square-foot facility is designed to mimic the complexity of everyday life. Far beyond a traditional classroom setting, the range features a fully functioning simulated town complete with hotel rooms, furnished houses, a hospital, a data center, a courthouse, and even a gas station and arcade. The goal is simple: immerse trainees in real-world scenarios that demand practical, field-ready skills.

Bridging the Gap

Dave Beachboard, the manager of the range, notes that the facility is fundamentally changing how FBI agents, analysts, and forensic specialists prepare for duty. Previously, training was largely theory-based, confined to desks and limited hands-on exercises. The Kinetic Cyber Range shatters that model by providing an environment that is as close to the real thing as possible before professionals deploy into the field.

Collaborative Excellence

The facility serves a wide range of partners beyond the FBI. Personnel from NASA, the U.S. Army, and various local law enforcement agencies have utilized the range to sharpen their expertise. With its integration of cutting-edge software, IoT devices, drone technology, and vehicle forensics, the Kinetic Cyber Range stands in a league of its own.

As Beachboard put it, there is truly no facility like this anywhere else in the world, ensuring that those training at Redstone Arsenal remain on the absolute cutting edge of investigative work.
