Two of the four inmates who staged a daring weekend escape from the Perry County Correctional Prep Center are back in custody as law enforcement continues its search for the remaining fugitives.

A Coordinated Breakout

The escape, which took place around 1 a.m. Saturday, was described by Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum as a coordinated effort involving outside assistance, a waiting getaway car, and a staged medical emergency. According to the Black Belt News Network, the inmates forced their way past two detention officers after one of them feigned a medical crisis in a pod. Surveillance footage captured the group as they breached the door and climbed three separate fences to secure their freedom.

Progress in the Manhunt

Authorities saw a breakthrough on Sunday. Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr. was taken into custody Sunday afternoon by Midfield police. Officials tracked him down after the Flock camera system identified a stolen 2012 Acura—taken from Selma on Saturday—traveling on the 600 block of the Bessemer Super Highway. Bush now faces charges of receiving stolen property and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail while awaiting extradition back to Perry County.

Later that same evening, Jaden Christopher Maxwell surrendered to authorities. Fourth Judicial Circuit District Attorney Robert Turner praised the efforts of the community and Maxwell's family for facilitating a peaceful resolution.

Continuing Search

While two individuals are back behind bars, the search remains active for the remaining two escapees. All four men were being housed at the Perry County facility as part of an agreement with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

"Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to locate and apprehend the remaining fugitives to ensure the safety of our communities," Turner stated. "Our office is committed to working closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure that those responsible for these crimes are apprehended and held accountable."
