TV evangelist of TBN and Daystar fame dies at 82

James Robison, the high-profile television evangelist known for his long-running program Life Today on both Trinity Broadcasting Network and Daystar, has passed away at the age of 82. His ministry confirmed the news on social media this past Sunday.

A Legacy of Faith and Influence

Born on Oct. 9, 1943, in Pasadena, Texas, Robison's life began with a unique story of adoption after his biological mother placed a newspaper advertisement seeking a family for her child. He was ultimately raised by a pastor and his wife. He later went on to found Life Outreach International, a Fort Worth-based relief organization that became the hallmark of his global ministry.

Throughout a career spanning six decades, Robison's impact was monumental. According to his ministry, he preached to more than 20 million people. His outreach efforts remain a significant part of his legacy, currently providing daily meals to 350,000 children in Mozambique and having funded the construction of over 9,000 wells, which provide clean water to more than 9 million individuals.

Political Impact and Ministry Shift

Robison was instrumental in the political mobilization of evangelical Christians. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who previously served as Robison's communications manager, noted that the evangelist played a key role in rallying the Moral Majority. This influence reached a crescendo during his 1980 speech at the National Affairs Briefing in Dallas, where he famously challenged God's people to step out of the shadows and influence American society.

While his ministry began with the guidance of Billy Graham in 1968, Robison shifted his focus in the mid-1980s, leaving the Southern Baptist Convention to align with the charismatic movement. He also authored over a dozen books, including True Prosperity, Thank God I'm Free, My Father's Face, and The Soul of a Nation.

Remembering a Leader

Life Outreach International issued a statement honoring their founder: “James devoted his life to sharing the Gospel and bringing hope, help, and healing to those in need around the world. Together, James and Betty stewarded a ministry that has touched countless lives and will continue impacting generations to come.”

Robison is survived by his wife, Betty, and their three children. As 205focus.com reported via original coverage, the ministry has pledged to continue its mission of delivering food, water, and the message of Christ in his honor.
