44-year-old indicted in killing of Birmingham man, unrelated kidnapping, rape of woman
A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted Christopher James Birl, 44, on charges of capital murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree kidnapping and theft of property.
A Birmingham man linked to a cold case homicide and a violent kidnapping has been hit with a series of major criminal indictments. A Jefferson County grand jury officially indicted 44-year-old Christopher James Birl on charges of capital murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree kidnapping, and theft of property.
The Arrest and Indictment
The indictments, issued on June 12 and released publicly Wednesday, formalize charges against Birl, who has remained behind bars at the Jefferson County Jail without bond since his arrest in March 2025.
Birl's capture occurred during a tense standoff at a residence in the 800 block of Nassau Avenue S.W. on March 16, 2025. Responding to reports of a burglary in progress, West Precinct officers arrived at the scene with information suggesting a homicide suspect might be inside. After the department’s Tactical Operations Division secured the home, they discovered a woman who had been sexually assaulted and held against her will. Birl attempted to evade capture by barricading himself in the attic, but he was ultimately taken into custody.
The 2024 Homicide Case
Beyond the kidnapping and sexual assault charges, Birl is accused in the 2024 shooting death of 52-year-old Maurice Turner.
Turner was killed on June 17, 2024, at his College Hills home. Authorities responded to a Shot Spotter alert in the 800 block of Jasper Road after 10 rounds were fired through the back door of the victim's apartment. First responders found Turner dead on his kitchen floor at 2:03 a.m.
The victim's family has endured a long search for justice since the tragic shooting. Turner’s death was a hard hit to those who loved and knew him best, with his sister, DeQuacha Fields, previously describing the loss as a devastating blur that the family struggled to comprehend.
While officials have not disclosed a motive or the specific evidence linking Birl to the scene, investigators had previously released surveillance footage of an SUV fleeing the area in hopes of identifying the perpetrator. No trial date has been set for the proceedings.
