50 Auburn players fans should know: The QB who could define Auburn’s 2026 season
The play of Auburn's new starting quarterback could define the Tigers' 2026 season
EDITOR’S NOTE: As we count down to the SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is profiling a key Auburn football player each day. Today, we turn our attention to the signal-caller expected to lead the charge: Byrum Brown.
The Man in the Middle
Standing at 6-foot-3 and 232 pounds, the Raleigh, North Carolina native is more than just a quarterback; he is a physical force. Tigers fans may recall his highlight-reel play against Boise State, where instead of coasting into the endzone, he lowered his shoulder and trucked a defender, setting the tone for a dominant 34-7 victory.
That intensity is a hallmark of his game. Brown is a true dual-threat competitor who generated 4,166 yards of total offense during his standout season at USF. It is that lethal combination of physical grit and elite production that made him the top priority for Auburn in the transfer portal.
Reuniting on the Plains
For Brown, the decision to transfer was about more than just a change of scenery. It was an opportunity to reunite with head coach Alex Golesh and offensive coordinator Joel Gordon. Brown recently described the move as an offer he simply couldn't turn down, citing his full trust in Golesh’s vision to rebuild the program.
His teammates are already buying in. Auburn center Cole Best points to Brown’s daily consistency and approachability as the bedrock of his leadership. By all accounts, Brown is the first player to pick up his teammates, and his presence has been instrumental in integrating the 12 other former USF transfers into the Auburn culture.
Production and Potential
The numbers don't lie. During his 2025 campaign, Brown threw for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns while adding 1,008 yards and 14 scores on the ground. Averaging 347.2 yards of total offense per game, he led all FBS players in that category.
While some critics have fixated on his unconventional throwing motion, coach Golesh isn't concerned. When social media chatter flared up following spring practice, Golesh brushed off the criticism, choosing instead to focus on September 5, 2026—the date that matters most. Even after a challenging A-Day scrimmage, where he threw for 85 yards and two interceptions, the confidence in his ability remains absolute.
As Auburn looks to move past a difficult five-year stretch, the spotlight is firmly on Brown. If Golesh’s assessment holds true, he has the potential to be the next transformative figure to wear the orange and blue. The weight of the season is on his shoulders, but those who know him say that is exactly where he belongs.
Coming Monday: 205focus.com profiles one of Brown’s key targets, tight end Jake Johnson.
