Alabama baseball learns opponent for Tuscaloosa Super Regional
Alabama baseball's upcoming opponent is a red hot underdog.
The path to Omaha is set, and the Alabama baseball team has officially found its next challenger. After securing a spot in the Super Regionals following a thrilling victory over Oklahoma State, the Crimson Tide are preparing to host their first Super Regional in Tuscaloosa since 2006. Their opponent? A red-hot St. John’s squad that just finished a Cinderella run in Tallahassee.
The Cinderella Story
St. John’s arrives in Tuscaloosa with plenty of momentum after pulling off a rare feat. The Red Storm, who entered the NCAA tournament after capturing the Big East tournament championship, became only the fifth No. 4 seed in tournament history to sweep a regional bracket.
Their path to the Supers was anything but easy. St. John’s opened the Tallahassee Regional with a 6-5 upset of host Florida State. They followed that up with a massive 21-8 offensive explosion against Northern Illinois. In the regional final, they proved their staying power by edging out Florida State once again, 5-4, to punch their ticket to Alabama.
The decisive blow in that final victory came from catcher Adam Agresti, whose fifth-inning grand slam propelled the Red Storm to the win. St. John’s head coach Mike Hampton credits the team's buy-in to a simple philosophy: "If we can go out there and attack the zone and throw quality strikes, defend the field and get timely hits, we’re going to be in every game."
Crimson Tide Momentum
Alabama enters this matchup with its own high-level confidence. The Crimson Tide are looking to punch their first College World Series ticket since 1996, a goal made possible by a dominant showing in their own regional.
Alabama opened the weekend with a 21-3 rout of Alabama State and maintained control with a 7-5 victory over USC Upstate. That set the stage for a Sunday showdown with Oklahoma State, where a clutch 11th-inning, three-RBI homer from Brady Neal secured the sweep.
"It’s about these guys and it’s about the legacy they’re leaving here," head coach Rob Vaughn said after the regional victory. "You honor teams that do special, special things. I told them, you want to be remembered at this place, you go do something special. And they’re in the process of doing that right now."
