Alabama singer who gave iconic studio early hit has died: ‘Will never be forgotten’

The world of music is mourning the loss of a true soul pioneer. Jimmy Hughes, the voice behind the 1964 smash hit Steal Away, has died at his home in Leighton, Alabama, at the age of 88. His passing was confirmed by Thompson and Sons Funeral Home.

A Foundation for the Muscle Shoals Sound

Recorded at the now-legendary FAME Studios, Steal Away wasn't just a top 20 hit; it was a cornerstone of the Muscle Shoals identity. Hughes famously laid down his expressive, silky vocals in a single take. In a tribute posted on Facebook, FAME Studios noted that while Arthur Alexander provided the region's first hit, it was Hughes who truly solidified the Muscle Shoals Sound, helping to put Muscle Shoals on the global map.

From Gospel Roots to Studio Stardom

Born and raised in Leighton, Hughes began his musical journey with the gospel group the Singing Clouds. He eventually transitioned to R&B, drawing inspiration from the traditional gospel hymn Steal Away Jesus to craft his signature cheating ballad. Beyond his breakout hit, Hughes delivered notable tracks like Neighbor, Neighbor, Why Not Tonight, and Try Me.

The late Rick Hall, who produced the FAME sessions, held Hughes in the highest regard. According to the University of North Alabama’s Music Trail, Hall once compared Hughes to his idol, Sam Cooke, calling him a "sensational high tenor" who possessed an unmatched ability to wring emotion from a lyric.

A Life Beyond the Limelight

Despite his success, Hughes stepped away from the music industry in the early 1970s. Disillusioned by label promotion and the grind of touring, he pursued a career crafting components for nuclear power plants and channeled his singing talent solely into his church congregation.

His influence, however, remains undeniable. Steal Away has been covered by music royalty, including Etta James, Clarence Carter, Bobbie Gentry, and Frank Zappa.

A Town Remembers a Legend

The community in Leighton is honoring its native son. The Leighton Police Department, the Town of Leighton, and the Leighton Museum all issued statements remembering Hughes as a pillar of the community whose optimism and musical legacy will be cherished for years to come. As FAME Studios poignantly stated, "Jimmy’s contributions to American music and the legacy of FAME will never be forgotten."
