ASWA softball all-state team features first 6-time selection in history

The record books have officially been rewritten. For the first time in Alabama Sports Writers Association history, a high school softball player has earned all-state honors six times.

Orange Beach catcher Ava Hodo achieved the historic milestone this week, cementing her legacy as one of the state's most consistent performers. Since earning second-team honors as a seventh-grader in 2021, the Arkansas signee has been a mainstay on the ASWA all-state squads, helping the Makos secure their sixth consecutive state championship this season.

The ASWA high school softball all-state teams, announced today at 205focus.com, highlight the top talent across seven AHSAA classes and the AISA. Hodo wasn't the only standout recognized for long-term excellence; her teammate Teagan Revette also earned her fifth career selection, having been a first-team staple every year since 2021, aside from an honorable mention nod as an eighth-grader in 2022.

Joining the exclusive five-time selection club are Daphne’s Abby J Johnson, Ider’s Makinley Traylor, and Wicksburg’s Ellie Cox. Johnson and Traylor enjoyed five consecutive seasons on the first team, while Cox transitioned from second-team honors as an eighth-grader to first-team status for the remainder of her high school career. Traylor wraps up her stellar tenure as the Class 1A Hitter of the Year, while Cox previously claimed the Class 2A Pitcher of the Year title in 2024.

Honoring the Best

The ASWA recognizes the top performers annually, awarding Player, Pitcher, Hitter, and Coach of the Year honors across all divisions. This year’s Players of the Year include Corey Goguts (Hewitt-Trussville, 7A), Myliegh Dobbins (Saraland, 6A), McKinley McCaghren (Lawrence County, 5A), Katie King (Orange Beach, 4A), Emily Needham (Saint James, 3A), Harper Myers (Lamar County, 2A), Braylynn Pope (Hackleburg, 1A), and Kennedy Childers (Bessemer Academy, AISA).

Fans can look forward to the unveiling of the coveted Miss Softball title and the Super All-State team at the annual ASWA banquet this Sunday in Jacksonville.
