Auburn baseball enters postseason with ‘more doors we could knock down’

For Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson and his squad, Monday was a day that will be etched in their memories for years to come. As the NCAA tournament bracket was unveiled, the Tigers officially secured the No. 4 national seed, marking a historic achievement for the program as it earns back-to-back Top 8 seeds for the first time ever.

Building on a Foundation of Consistency

The current roster carries the weight of last year’s deep postseason push, which ultimately concluded in the super regionals. With that valuable experience now ingrained in the team, there is a palpable sense that this group is primed to shatter previous ceilings. “It’s been a pretty good level of consistency,” Thompson noted, “but at the same time, there’s some more doors that we could knock down.”

The Road Through Plainsman Park

By locking in the No. 4 national seed, Auburn ensures that its road to the College World Series runs directly through the friendly confines of Plainsman Park. The Tigers are set to host Milwaukee, Central Florida, and North Carolina State in the regional round, beginning with a matchup against Milwaukee.

Success in the regional round would keep the Tigers at home for the Super Regionals. Their path is linked with the Lincoln regional, hosted by No. 13 seed Nebraska, which also features Ole Miss, Arizona State, and South Dakota State. While the possibility of a rematch with the Cornhuskers—whom Auburn defeated earlier this season—lingers on the horizon, Thompson remains laser-focused on the immediate task at hand.

Pitching and Poise

A defining characteristic of this Auburn team has been its elite pitching staff. Boasting a 3.45 team ERA that ranks tied for third in the nation, the staff has been anchored by the stellar performances of Jake Marciano, Andreas Alvarez, Jackson Sanders, and Alex Petrovic. Marciano, who arrived at Auburn after transferring from Virginia Tech, has evolved into the team's top starter.

“It couldn’t have gone better, to be honest,” Marciano said of his transition to Auburn. “Being able to get an opportunity and roll with it. I think leading up to this postseason, it’s really something special to be part of it and just happy to start.”

Chasing History

While the draw appears favorable—the Auburn regional holds the lowest average RPI in the tournament—Thompson isn't letting his team get comfortable. He continues to emphasize the fundamentals: consistent pitching, timely hitting, and reliable defense. For the Tigers, the goal is to transform last year’s milestone of a top-eight seed into a deeper run this time around.

“Understand that this is pretty neat in our program’s history, doing some things that are at a high level,” Thompson said. “But then still an urgency, and a fire, and a desire to keep trying to find more, get something done, and check another box, and do something the program hasn’t done before. It’s an opportunity, and we’re looking forward to it.”
