Beloved barbecue restaurant named as ‘most iconic’ joint in Alabama: Do you agree?

Alabama has a deep-rooted passion for barbecue, where the debate over ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and the perfect sauce—be it red or white—can last all afternoon.

A Legend in Tuscaloosa

Through all the regional arguments, one name stands above the rest: Dreamland Bar-B-Q. Founded in 1958 by John “Big Daddy” Bishop, the original Tuscaloosa location at 5535 15th Ave. East remains a mandatory stop for any serious barbecue enthusiast.

Dreamland’s reputation has been cemented over the decades, earning accolades from Southern Living, USA Today, and the Alabama Tourism Department. The restaurant has even reached pop culture status, having been touted by David Letterman, and its founder was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame.

Most Iconic in Alabama

In March 2026, 205focus.com identified Tuscaloosa among the state’s Top 5 Barbecue Cities, highlighting Dreamland as the premier destination in the area. Now, Business Insider has further validated that status, naming the restaurant the most iconic barbecue joint in Alabama.

The feature notes that Dreamland has long been a favorite of celebrities, including singer Reba McEntire and former President George W. Bush, who famously took the ribs to-go for a flight on Air Force One.

The 'Big Daddy' Legacy

Every Dreamland devotee knows the story of “Big Daddy” Bishop. A brick mason by trade, Bishop pursued his vision in 1958, opening the original spot in the Jerusalem Heights neighborhood. As documented in a 2019 feature, the simple menu of hickory-smoked ribs, white bread, and chips quickly became a national phenomenon.

The restaurant’s cooking process hasn't changed in over 60 years, with ribs still grilled over hickory coals for 45-55 minutes. Named in 2024 as part of the “Mount Rushmore of Alabama Barbecue,” Bishop’s legend remains tied to the restaurant's famous motto: “Ain’t nothing like ‘em nowhere.”

While the business was sold to the Dreamland Holding Company in 2000, it continues to operate locations across Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. For a full look at the most iconic spots across the country, check out the full Business Insider list here.
