‘Blue envelopes’ program helps drivers with autism, and police (Enable: The Disability Podcast)
The free public service program provides blue envelopes for drivers with neurodivergence.
The New York State Sheriffs’ Association is making traffic stops safer and less stressful for neurodivergent drivers through its innovative Blue Envelope Program. This free public service provides a dedicated envelope designed to assist drivers with autism and neurodivergence during interactions with law enforcement.
How the Blue Envelope Works
The program, as highlighted on Enable: The Disability Podcast, aims to reduce anxiety by helping drivers prepare for potential emergencies or routine traffic stops. By presenting a blue envelope to an officer, a driver can clearly communicate their diagnosis and provide instructions on how to best interact with them. Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Danielle Podejko notes that this simple tool is a major step toward fostering understanding and improving communication between police and the communities they serve.
Getting Involved
If you or a loved one could benefit from the program, you can request an envelope directly through the NYS Sheriffs’ Association at nysheriffs.org/blue-envelope. Residents in the Syracuse and Central New York area can also reach out to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Community Relations Unit by calling 315-435-3006 or emailing DaniellePodejko@ongov.net.
