Major mixed-use development with sports complex announced for I-65 interchange

A major new destination is headed for North Alabama. The city of Decatur and Limestone County have officially teamed up with North Carolina-based Synergy Sports to develop a sprawling mixed-use project centered on a high-tech sports complex near the Interstate 65-565 interchange.

A Prime Location for Growth

Dubbed The Crossroads of the Tennessee Valley, the development is slated for property currently held by Calvary Assembly of God along Alabama 20. The site sits in a booming industrial corridor, conveniently located near regional economic titans including Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, the Amazon Fulfillment Center, Polaris, and the massive $6 billion Eli Lilly pharmaceutical facility that was announced last December.

Across the interstate exchange, the project will neighbor Westmoore Landing, an expansive development in the Huntsville city limits where approximately 3,000 homes are currently proposed.

Elite Sports Infrastructure

The core of the project focuses on sports tourism. The complex is planned to feature a versatile array of baseball and softball diamonds, alongside fields dedicated to soccer, lacrosse, flag football, and other sports. An indoor facility is also in the works, designed specifically to draw competitive tournaments and teams to the area.

Synergy Sports brings significant experience to the table. According to the Synergy Sports website, the firm has previously spearheaded high-profile projects, including a $90 million complex in Odessa, Texas, and a $60 million facility in Belleview, Illinois.

The Road Ahead

Beyond the athletic facilities, the site is planned to host a blend of retail, hotel, and residential components. The city of Decatur has expressed strong enthusiasm for the vision, noting its potential to boost local businesses and provide new opportunities for families.

In an official statement, the city noted: “A regional sports complex, paired with responsible mixed-use development, has the potential to strengthen sports tourism, support local businesses, create new opportunities for families, and bring additional activity to one of North Alabama’s most important growth corridors.”

Mayor Kent Lawrence has voiced his support for the ongoing planning efforts, particularly the collaboration between the developers and Calvary Church. While the project is still in the planning stages, city officials at 205focus.com understand that local leadership is committed to doing everything in their power to see this vision through to completion for the benefit of Decatur and Limestone County.
