Class 6A baseball: Cain Falciani, Hartselle walk off Spain Park in Game 1
Cruise Baker and Braden Weathers homered as Hartselle defeated Spain Park in a tight Game 1 of the Class 6A title series.
Most baseball teams would panic with their No. 9 hitter facing a bases-loaded situation in a tied bottom of the seventh. But the Hartselle Tigers aren't just any team, and senior Cain Falciani is certainly not your average No. 9 hitter.
Falciani delivered a dramatic, one-out single into right-center field on Wednesday afternoon at Choccolocco Park, scoring the winning run to secure a 9-8 victory for the fifth-ranked Tigers over No. 2 Spain Park in Game 1 of the Class 6A championship series.
A Pattern of Late-Game Heroics
"If you go back and look at our history this season, this is kind of how we have gotten here," Hartselle head coach Brad Phillips said. "I think we’ve walked it off in the last couple of Game 1s, and this guy has done it a couple of times. He has mature at-bats. He was going to find the barrel. With the infield in, he took a nice, short swing and walked it off."
The Tigers (32-11) now set their sights on capturing the program’s 11th state title. The series continues Thursday at 10 a.m. at Jim Case Stadium in Jacksonville. Spain Park (35-9) will need a Game 2 win to keep their championship hopes alive and force a decisive final game.
Back-and-Forth Battle
The contest faced an hour-and-20-minute weather delay early on, and Spain Park jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. However, Hartselle responded immediately. Cruise Baker ignited the offense with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, followed by a three-run blast from Braden Weathers in the second inning to flip the script at 5-3. The Tigers stretched their advantage to 8-4 by the fourth.
Spain Park didn't fold, clawing back with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to knot the score at 8-8. "I thought the first four innings were very uncharacteristic of how we have played this year," said Spain Park coach Will Smith. "I think at one point, we had walked or hit close to seven guys. To their credit, they took advantage."
The Winning Rally
With the game on the line in the seventh, Carter Lee started the rally with a bloop single, followed by singles from Sam Gillette and Jack Sims to load the bases for Falciani. Falciani lined a pitch from Ryne Paquette into right, scoring pinch-runner Chris Hutson to seal the win. Hartselle’s Asher Doepel earned the win with a scoreless frame of relief.
