Controversial actor pleads guilty after Mardi Gras bar altercation
Over the last decade, the actor's reputation has become increasingly tied to multiple reports of alleged violent conduct.
Shia LaBeouf has entered a guilty plea to three misdemeanor battery charges following a chaotic late-night incident at a New Orleans bar during this year's Mardi Gras festivities.
The Verdict
Magistrate Judge Juana Lombard sentenced the actor to a suspended six-month jail term along with two years of probation, as reported by NOLA.com. LaBeouf, famously known for his roles in “Transformers” and “Holes,” appeared in New Orleans criminal court to finalize the resolution of the case after District Attorney Jason Williams filed the charges earlier this year.
Incident Breakdown
The controversial actor was taken into custody by the New Orleans Police Department outside the R Bar in Faubourg Marigny. According to a police report, authorities arrived at the Royal Street site around 12:45 a.m. on Feb. 17 after reports surfaced regarding two assault victims.
Witness accounts and video footage obtained by TMZ depict an escalating situation where LaBeouf removed his shirt and began pushing and striking individuals while yelling, “Let’s fight, let’s fight.” Bystanders eventually restrained him until law enforcement arrived. The police report further alleged that LaBeouf used homophobic slurs during the confrontation and subsequent arrest, at one point stating, “These f****ts put me in jail. I’m a Catholic.”
Legal Defense
Following the plea, LaBeouf’s attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, downplayed the event as a “minor Mardi Gras bar tussle.” Chervinsky maintained that there was no evidence of bias or prejudice in the incident, which she cited as the reason the state proceeded with low-level misdemeanors. “Mr. LaBeouf came to court today wanting to take accountability for his part in what happened, and he has done so,” she stated. “Now he’s looking forward to focusing on family, work, and new creative projects.”
A Pattern of Controversy
This incident is the latest in a decade-long string of behavioral reports involving the actor. Shortly after the New Orleans altercation, Page Six reported on footage showing LaBeouf shouting erratically at a woman in Rome.
LaBeouf's legal history includes a high-profile lawsuit filed by musician FKA Twigs in December 2020, which alleged sexual battery and assault. PEOPLE reported that the case was settled in July 2025, with the actor denying the claims. Additionally, he was arrested in Georgia in 2017 for disorderly conduct and public intoxication, which resulted in a mandate for court-ordered treatment.
