Democrats seize on Trump’s latest out-of-touch remark: High gas prices are ‘peanuts’
A top-ranking Democrat said Americans should think of Trump's comment at the gas pump.
Democratic leaders are turning up the heat on President Donald Trump following his latest comments regarding the nation's ongoing affordability crisis. While Americans continue to navigate high gas prices, the President dismissed the financial burden as nothing more than “peanuts” during a Tuesday tour of the White House ballroom construction.
The President’s Perspective
“This is peanuts. And I appreciate everybody putting up with it for a little while. It won’t be much longer ... But I don’t even think about that,” Trump told reporters. He shifted the focus of his remarks to foreign policy, stating, “What I think about is you can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon, and they won’t have a nuclear weapon, and they totally understand it.”
These latest comments follow a pattern of rhetoric that has drawn sharp rebukes. On May 12, Trump explicitly stated that he did not give any thought to the economic struggles of Americans, remarking, “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody,” when questioned on his priorities regarding Iran. You can read more about the President's previous stance on these economic concerns here.
Democrats Fire Back
House Democratic Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) is leading the push to keep these remarks front and center for voters. In a recent post on X, Clark challenged citizens to remember the President's indifference the next time they pull up to a gas pump.
The sentiment has resonated across social media, where critics of the President are expressing frustration over what they describe as a tone-deaf approach to the struggles of everyday families. While some social media users highlighted his focus on luxury projects like ballrooms, others argue the comments prove a sustained lack of empathy for his base.
