DWTS winner describes being ‘death rolled’ by 14-foot croc named Jimmy Fallon
“He’s now what we call a boss croc. He’s huge.”
While appearing recently on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Robert Irwin described being “death rolled” by a crocodile that he had named in honor of Jimmy Fallon. Irwin, 22, a wildlife conservationist and former winner of “Dancing With the Stars,” appeared on the show May 4. When Fallon asked mentioned his namesake, Irwin replied: “He’s now what we call a boss croc. He’s huge.” The story begins at the 6:10 mark in the video below. Irwin first explained he was working with the croc in the way his famous father, Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin, had taught him. “I jumped on the back of Jimmy Fallon and get this: He death-rolled me,” Irwin said. “I kid you not, 14 feet of crocodile – big croc – death rolls me. So I’m stuck underneath him with my arm hanging out. I’ve got probably 700 pounds on top of me, and I’m just like, ‘What do I do?’” According to the University of Tennessee, crocodiles use the maneuver because they can’t chew. “So they use a powerful bite coupled with a full-bodied twisting motion—a death roll—to disable, kill, and dismember prey into smaller pieces.” That allows the croc to swallow his prey. Irwin managed to escape the death roll. “Luckily, he rolled back the other way, and I was fine,” Irwin told Fallon. “But he’s a goer, Jimmy!”
