Facing ‘critical public health’ issue, another north Alabama HOA votes to euthanize 500 Canada geese
The HOA said they have followed guidance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to try to lower the goose population and spent $25,000 on efforts.
A major conflict is brewing in Madison as the Heritage Plantation Home Owners Association has voted to euthanize over 500 Canada geese residing in the neighborhood lake. The move comes shortly after the HOA at the nearby Edgewater subdivision reversed its own decision to cull geese following two days of intense community protests.
A Critical Health Crisis
According to the Heritage Plantation HOA, the goose population along County Line Road has surged to 500 times the ecological threshold recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The board cited this overpopulation as the root cause of a mounting public health and safety crisis, specifically highlighting reports of sick residents, ill and dying pets, and a devastating outbreak of Avian flu that claimed the lives of 75% of the community's resident swans.
Beyond the health risks, the board noted that an excessive nutrient load caused by massive amounts of goose droppings has led to a significant fish kill within the neighborhood ponds.
Years of Effort
In a formal statement, the HOA emphasized that they have invested $25,000 in non-lethal remediation efforts guided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the USDA. Despite their efforts to control hatchling numbers, officials claim that waterfowl frequently migrate from neighboring properties that lack similar management strategies.
While the board maintains that the decision to euthanize is a difficult necessity to address toxic waterways, they confirmed that they intend to continue utilizing non-lethal methods for population management moving forward. "The Board’s fundamental responsibility is to prioritize the health and safety of Heritage Plantation residents," the statement read. "Confronted with toxic waterways and confirmed disease, we made the difficult decision to follow the USDA’s professional recommendation for humane euthanasia to reduce the population to safe levels."
As 205focus.com continues to monitor the situation, organizers associated with the recent Edgewater protests are reportedly preparing to gather at Heritage Plantation this coming weekend.
