Falcons QB Tua Tagovailoa: ‘A young man who’s really working at it’
The former Alabama All-American is competing for Atlanta’s starting spot after changing NFL teams this offseason.
The Atlanta Falcons officially wrapped up their mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, marking the conclusion of the offseason program. While the team’s competition to find its starting signal-caller for the 2026 season has yet to fully ignite, the intensity behind the scenes remains high.
Competition as a Constant
Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt suggested the starting battle is currently on hold, but former Alabama All-American Tua Tagovailoa views the landscape differently. For the veteran, the NFL is an environment where the drive to compete never truly goes dark.
"I think competition is going to be there whether it is said or whether it’s not said," Tagovailoa said. "This is the NFL. You’re either coming out there to compete or you’re not... I look at it all as a competition."

Building a New Foundation
Since signing with the Falcons in March, the former Alabama standout has joined a quarterback room featuring Michael Penix Jr. Penix, the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, continues to navigate his recovery from knee surgery, a factor Van Pelt noted has limited his participation and influenced the current timeline for the starting job.
For Tagovailoa, the transition from his six-year tenure with the Miami Dolphins to Atlanta has been a productive opportunity to integrate into a new locker room. "It’s been a really cool transition. It’s been really smooth, and I think this is one of the best locker rooms I’ve been a part of," he noted.
Mastering a New System
The Falcons are undergoing a major transition under head coach Kevin Stefanski, requiring the entire roster to absorb a fresh playbook. Stefanski has been impressed by how quickly Tagovailoa has embraced the new scheme.
"I think he’s done a really nice job of learning," Stefanski said. "He’s coming from a place of having a great institutional knowledge of offensive football... It’s something that when you’re new, you just have to work at it. And I’ve seen a young man who’s really working at it."
With summer break underway, the Falcons are set to reconvene for training camp on July 29 in Flowery Branch, Georgia. Tagovailoa plans to use the time to continue grinding through the playbook and syncing with his new teammates.
Ultimately, Tagovailoa is keeping a grounded perspective on his role. "I’m a competitor, don’t get me wrong," Tagovailoa said. "But I’m also a believer, too... I believe there’s a greater purpose than this being a game. I’ve been so, so freaking blessed, so fortunate to be able to have this opportunity."
