Former Jeffco deputy indicted in DUI crash that hurt 3, narrowly missed school bus
Shamonte D. Lanfair, 34, is charged with two counts of first-degree assault.
A former Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy is facing serious charges following an indictment related to a DUI crash that injured three people and nearly resulted in a tragedy involving a school bus.
Indictment Details
Shamonte D. Lanfair, 34, has been charged with two counts of first-degree assault. The indictments were issued on May 14 and were made public this past Tuesday, according to 205focus.com reporting. Court records indicate that Lanfair was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. She was initially arrested several weeks after the wreck occurred.
Crash Context
The incident took place at 3:43 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at an intersection on Alabama 75. Although Lanfair was off-duty, she was operating her department-issued 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol unit when the crash occurred. Witnesses noted the vehicle narrowly missed a school bus that had just cleared the intersection.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), which led the investigation, reported that Lanfair’s patrol SUV struck a sedan driven by 22-year-old Kayla Williams of Birmingham. The force of that collision caused the sedan to strike a second vehicle, driven by 30-year-old Deja S. Davis of Center Point.
Aftermath and Medical Care
Williams, Davis, and Williams’ 15-year-old brother, Nick, were all transported to local hospitals for treatment following the wreck. Lanfair also sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to UAB Hospital. The former deputy previously waived her right to a preliminary hearing, moving the case forward to the grand jury.
Lanfair currently remains out of jail on bond.
