Heisman Trophy winner won’t fight again after MMA debut: ‘This was good enough’
The 33-year-old fought Saturday at the UFC Apex Center in Las Vegas.
Johnny Manziel made his return to the spotlight this Saturday, but the former Heisman Trophy winner swapped the football field for the octagon. Competing in his first-ever mixed martial arts bout at the UFC Apex Center in Las Vegas, the 33-year-old former NFL quarterback delivered a decisive performance.
A Dominant Debut
Manziel wasted little time making his presence felt, dominating social media influencer Bob Menery. The fight reached its conclusion early, with Manziel controlling the pace through a series of kicks before executing a takedown that forced a referee stoppage at the 2:16 mark of the first round.
While the transition to combat sports was successful, Manziel indicated that his time in the cage was a one-off experience. As reported by ESPN, Manziel stated, “This was good enough for one time.”
Aftermath in the Octagon
Menery, 38, shared the aftermath of the encounter on his Instagram Stories, showing off a significant forehead injury. Reflecting on the bout, Menery noted the weight disparity, stating, “He had 30 pounds on me. But pummeled me.”
Manziel offered a blunt response to his opponent's assessment, telling Menery, “We both fight like s---, Bobby Boy. Respect for getting in there though. I was trying to write OVO on your forehead.”
The event, which was promoted by Kick streamer Adin Ross’ Brand Risk Promotions, served as a unique chapter for the former Texas A&M standout. Manziel, who was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft, concluded his professional football career with 1,675 passing yards and seven touchdowns over two seasons.
