Former Alabama high school standout retires from NFL after rookie minicamp
The wide receiver had joined the Chicago Bears as an undrafted rookie.
Former Clay-Chalkville High School standout Squirrel White has abruptly retired from the NFL after participating in the Chicago Bears’ rookie minicamp this past weekend.
The Bears originally signed White as an undrafted free agent on April 25 following the conclusion of the NFL Draft. After getting his first taste of professional action at the minicamp, the Bears placed White on the reserve/retired list on Monday.
Reports from the Chicago Tribune and ESPN indicated that White left a workout session on Saturday with athletic trainers and did not return to the field. Under NFL rules, the reserve/retired designation allows the Bears to retain White's contract rights should he ever decide to return to active status.
A Legacy of Local Success
White was a vital component of the undefeated 2021 Clay-Chalkville team that brought home the AHSAA Class 6A state championship. His athleticism was equally evident on the track, where he finished as the runner-up in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the 2021 AHSAA Class 6A outdoor track and field championships.
At the collegiate level, White spent three seasons at Tennessee, highlighted by a productive 2023 campaign in which he hauled in 67 passes for 803 yards and two touchdowns. He spent the 2025 season at Florida State, where injuries limited him to five receptions for 52 yards.
Larry Worth III Joins the 49ers
While White’s NFL journey has reached an end, another player with deep Alabama ties is just getting started. Former Jacksonville State safety Larry Worth III signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday following a successful tryout at their rookie minicamp.
Worth played for the Gamecocks during the 2022 and 2023 seasons before spending the last two years at Arkansas. Although he played safety throughout his college career, San Francisco has him listed as a linebacker on their current roster.
