Huntsville chips in $2.3 million to boost big project at Ditto Landing: ‘Very exciting’

Huntsville is taking a major step toward finishing a landmark project at Ditto Landing. The City Council recently approved a contract exceeding $2.3 million to construct a 450-space parking lot, a vital component of the Madison County Commission's $13.2 million event center development along the Tennessee River.

A Critical Piece of the Puzzle

As construction on the event center nears completion, city officials emphasized the necessity of adequate infrastructure. During the council meeting, City Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis framed the parking project as a key partnership with Madison County, aimed at supporting new leasing opportunities and driving revenue for the area.

Council President Jennie Robinson highlighted the importance of the investment, noting that the venue would be unable to function without proper accommodations for guests. The parking project, which falls under the city's capital plan, came in under the initial $3 million budget, freeing up resources for related site improvements including irrigation, lighting, landscaping, and the relocation of 450 feet of existing greenway near Hobbs Island Road. The contract has been awarded to the Rogers Group, a firm familiar with multiple city road projects.

Transforming the Riverfront

The event center project, spearheaded by Madison County Commissioner Phil Riddick, involves renovating the 20,000-square-foot State Docks warehouse. Set on a prime 2.5-acre site with expansive river and bridge views, the facility is designed to host a wide range of gatherings, from weddings and corporate events to seated dinners and concerts.

Once operational, the venue will boast significant capacity, offering space for 600-seated dinners or indoor concerts for up to 1,100 attendees. Commissioner Riddick noted that the facility aims to provide more concert capacity than Mars Music Hall at the Von Braun Center and more dinner seating than the Jackson Center. Beyond the indoor space, a dedicated courtyard will accommodate food trucks and outdoor concerts, with future plans even exploring boat lifts to allow river traffic to dock directly at the event.

The event center is being built by Lee Builders, the same firm behind the renovation of Joe Davis Stadium, which now serves as the home for Huntsville City Football Club.
