Iconic medical drama gets major network spinoff: ‘I am incredibly excited’

The legendary medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is officially expanding its footprint on ABC. The network has announced a brand-new spinoff series set to debut during the 2026-2027 broadcast season, keeping the pulse of the long-running franchise beating strong.

According to Variety, the upcoming hour-long drama will shift the focus to a rural medical center in West Texas. The series is being described as an edgy take on life at a facility that serves as the final lifeline for care across miles of isolated territory.
Production and Creative Leadership
The creative powerhouse behind the original hit, Shonda Rhimes, is set to serve as co-creator and executive producer. Joining her in that role is Ellen Pompeo, the longtime star and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy. While the excitement is palpable, it remains unconfirmed if Pompeo’s iconic character, Meredith Grey, or any other established favorites will appear in the currently untitled spinoff.
Meg Marinis, who has served as the showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy since 2024, is stepping into the role of executive producer for this new venture. Expressing her enthusiasm, Marinis stated, “I am incredibly excited to expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
Building on a Legacy
This new project marks the latest chapter in the franchise's history. Over the past 22 years, the world of Grey’s Anatomy has successfully launched several offshoots, including Private Practice (2007–2013), Station 19 (2018–2024), and the digital series Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team, which debuted on ABC.com in 2018.
