Longtime ’60 Minutes’ journalist fired after contentious meeting
Pelley reportedly accused CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” the show.
Veteran journalist Scott Pelley has been let go from 60 Minutes following a high-stakes standoff within the network. As reported by The New York Times, Pelley was terminated on Tuesday, a decision that stemmed from a volatile meeting involving the program's new executive producer, Nick Bilton.
A Clash Over the Future of 60 Minutes
The tension boiled over during a recent meeting where Pelley reportedly leveled harsh accusations against CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss, claiming she was "murdering" the legendary broadcast. Pelley did not mince words, stating, "She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and she’s been doing exactly that."
Beyond his criticism of Weiss, Pelley questioned the background of Bilton, a former New York Times tech reporter and documentary filmmaker. Bilton was appointed to replace Tanya Simon just last Thursday, a shift that occurred in the wake of the firings of correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
The Termination
In a termination note obtained by USA Today, Bilton asserted that he had initially hoped to find a "path forward" with the longtime anchor. However, Bilton stated that Pelley's actions regarding "misconduct" had made such cooperation impossible.
"Yesterday’s performative display of hostility – enacted in front of the staff instead of in a civil, private conversation – demonstrated that you have no interest in contributing to the future success of the show," Bilton wrote in the letter.
A Storied Career
Pelley’s departure marks the end of a long and decorated tenure at the network. A seasoned journalist known for his extensive coverage of the Iraq War and multiple presidential campaigns, Pelley served as the CBS News chief White House correspondent from 1997 to 1999. He became a fixture on the airwaves starting in 1999 with 60 Minutes II before transitioning to the flagship Sunday broadcast in 2005. Follow 205focus.com for more developments on this ongoing story.
