More flooding possible today in Alabama: Where to watch
No severe weather expected, but there could be some thunderstorms.
Alabama residents are bracing for another wet day as the threat of flash flooding persists across the northern and central portions of the state. Following a weekend of relentless rainfall, flood watches remain in effect through tonight.
Weekend Deluge Leaves Its Mark
Heavy downpours left parts of northern and central Alabama waterlogged on Sunday. According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, some areas in the northern region recorded staggering totals between 3 and 9 inches of rain between Sunday and Monday morning. The Huntsville area, in particular, was at the center of the downpour, seeing more than 5 inches of accumulation.
The aftermath was significant: road closures persisted into Monday morning, and some residents on the north side of Huntsville reported water invading their homes. Similar flooding conditions were noted late Sunday in the Birmingham metro area and Gadsden as the system pushed through.
What to Expect Today
Forecasters are warning that the danger hasn't passed. A Level 2 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall has been issued for north and northeast Alabama today, indicating at least a 15% probability of flash flooding. Central Alabama is under a Level 1 risk, carrying a 5% probability of excessive moisture.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville anticipates slow-moving thunderstorms, noting that “excessive rainfall rates with this activity will result in a higher-than-normal risk for flash flooding (especially in locations that received heavy rain yesterday).”
Looking Ahead
While scattered storms will continue to bring rain chances into Tuesday, the atmosphere will remain free of organized severe weather. Looking further out, the forecast suggests scattered showers will linger in eastern Alabama through Wednesday. By the latter half of the week, weather patterns are expected to return to the typical summertime routine of afternoon storms, though rain chances are set to climb again by the weekend.
As the rain tapers off, the heat will return with a vengeance. Temperatures are projected to reach the upper 80s and 90s throughout the weekend, pushing heat index values above 100 degrees in many locations.
