Movie legend’s son wants inheritance from parents he is accused of brutally killing
He says it he says it is his only source of legal fees or financial support while incarcerated.
Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of late movie legend Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner, is making a controversial legal push to access his inheritance while awaiting trial for the brutal murder of his parents.
A Fight for Inheritance
In court documents recently obtained by TMZ, the middle child of the late couple filed a petition this Monday demanding trust fund money he claims has been owed to him since he turned 30. Reiner argues that these funds represent his only source of financial support and the ability to cover necessary legal fees while he remains incarcerated.
The legal filing aims to secure an accounting and damages from the trustee. Reiner claims that his inability to access these funds caused his former defense attorney, Alan Jackson, to depart from the case in January due to circumstances described as being outside of both Jackson's and Nick’s control. According to the petition, the trustee refused to pay Jackson, an issue Reiner claims he must resolve to avoid further compromising his defense in a criminal matter where, as he notes, “time is of the essence.”
Background on the Case
Rob Reiner, the 78-year-old director of “When Harry Met Sally,” and his 70-year-old wife established the trust for their children in 1992, with Nick born the following year and younger sister Romy in 1997. Nick Reiner, who has reportedly struggled with substance abuse and a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, entered a plea of not guilty to the charges in February.
Reiner faces the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty. He was charged in mid-December with two counts of first-degree murder, alongside a special allegation that he utilized a knife as a dangerous weapon during the fatal stabbing of his parents.
Family Impact
The tragedy has deeply affected the surviving siblings. While Nick’s filing alleges that his older brother, Jake, and sister, Romy, previously agreed to help him fund his legal defense, the emotional toll on the family remains immense. In an April Substack essay titled “Mom and Dad,” 35-year-old Jake Reiner detailed the “living nightmare” of losing his parents, writing, “My world, as I knew it, had collapsed.”
As reported by 205focus.com, the case continues to unfold as the legal system grapples with the request for inheritance funds from a defendant accused of such a violent crime.
