She was shot and robbed shortly after she finished her shift.
New details have emerged surrounding the tragic shooting of a nurse at an Alabama hospital, shedding light on the timeline of the incident that occurred as she finished her shift.
Ada Catherine Chapman Doss, a 27-year-old wife, mother, and nurse case manager, was killed by a single gunshot wound in the south parking lot of DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa on May 12.
Matthew James Taylor, 41, has been charged with capital murder and is currently being held without bond at the Tuscaloosa County Jail. Investigators report that Taylor arrived at the hospital that Tuesday, claiming to be in a mental health crisis and seeking assistance.
According to charging documents, Taylor first attempted to rob a woman in the parking lot; however, she was able to drive away safely. Shortly after, he targeted Doss as she walked to her vehicle, brandishing a firearm and demanding her keys. Despite her continuing toward her car with Taylor following, he shot her once before searching through her belongings and entering the vehicle.
Hospital Enhances Security Measures
In the wake of the tragedy, DCH officials have released a statement regarding the events leading up to the murder. "Looking back cannot bring Ada back to us but looking back help us take steps to provide greater safety for our employees and visitors in the future," the statement read.
The hospital has confirmed an increased presence of security personnel and the deployment of off-duty police officers during peak traffic times, including shift changes. Furthermore, they are consulting with local law enforcement, University of Alabama police, and national security experts to overhaul their safety protocols.
Planned enhancements include physical upgrades such as improved lighting, fencing, and badge readers, alongside bolstered security training and staff numbers. Hospital leadership noted that through recent listening sessions with front-line caregivers, they have gained "extremely beneficial insights" and remain committed to full transparency with their staff and the community.
