Soap star and Alabama native joins voting rights rally in Montgomery
A CBS soap star makes a special, unscripted appearance at an Alabama voting rights rally.
Attendees at Saturday's major voting rights rally in Montgomery received an unscripted surprise when a familiar face from the world of daytime television joined the crowd. Sean Freeman, a standout on the CBS hit Beyond the Gates, made his way downtown to stand with residents protesting state efforts to redraw congressional district lines—a move critics argue favors the Republican majority while diluting the influence of Democratic voters.
A Home-State Appearance
Freeman, a Dothan native currently starring as Andre Richardson in the soap opera’s second season, was back in Alabama when the demonstration took place. The actor spent time mingling with the crowd, taking photos and connecting with fans who spotted him among the throngs of protesters.
Supporting the Cause
For Freeman, the decision to attend was rooted in a desire to better understand the social and economic challenges currently facing his home state. He emphasized that his presence was about more than just his celebrity status.
“I was off today, glory to God, so I decided to drive down, take some time, to not only show support but also to learn,” Freeman told 205focus.com. He noted that being a Black American citizen provided more than enough motivation to show up.
Reflecting on his own civic journey, Freeman admitted, "I’ve historically been a lazy voter. I vote for who I’ve heard about the most, but I understand that’s crazy. You don’t vote for who you don’t know about. You need to do your research. So I’m not only out here as a celebrity or to show support and solidarity but also as a citizen who wants to learn and be about what I’m going to vote about."
