Some parts of Alabama are finally drought-free
Increased rain chances expected this weekend.
Alabama is seeing a welcome shift in weather patterns, with the latest data showing significant improvement in the state's ongoing struggle with dry conditions.
Drought-Free Progress
According to the latest update from the U.S. Drought Monitor, large portions of north and north-central Alabama are now officially drought-free. The report, which was compiled this past Tuesday and released on Thursday, highlights a major turning point for those regions.
While Level 1 drought conditions remain across parts of south and east Alabama, the situation is drastically better than it was just two weeks ago, when several of these same areas were grappling with Level 3 drought status.
More Rain on the Horizon
The trend toward wetter conditions could continue through the coming week. The National Weather Service is forecasting increased chances for rain, with a precipitation outlook currently extending through May 11.
If the forecast holds, parts of north and central Alabama could see up to 2 inches of additional rainfall. While south Alabama is expected to receive slightly less, projections show anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch to 1.75 inches for those regions.
As reported by 205focus.com, observers should look for the next U.S. Drought Monitor update on June 11 to see how these upcoming showers further impact the state.
