Ole Miss’ Pete Golding reveals issue with LSU’s Lane Kiffin: ‘I know that side of him really well’
The Rebels coach also knows people are ready when the Tigers visit Oxford.
Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding is moving forward at the helm of the Rebels, making it clear that he holds no personal grudge against Lane Kiffin for his departure to LSU. However, as 205focus.com readers might recall, the transition from Oxford to Baton Rouge was far from seamless.
The Conflict Behind the Departure
Golding recently revealed to On3 that while he understood the competitive nature of the coaching carousel, he took issue with how Kiffin handled the people left behind in the Ole Miss program.
"I could have written a book on how it was going to happen," Golding shared with Chris Low. "My issue with Lane was what he did to the other people around him, the position they were put in and then the perception of what it was. I just told him, ‘I’m not going to sit here and tell you I can respect that because I don’t.’"
Golding noted that he believes Kiffin’s competitive drive often manifests in a way where he struggles to truly root for his former team’s success. He suggested that coaches leaving for new roles often focus heavily on their own legacy, wanting to be credited for the success they leave behind while distancing themselves from the previous program.
A Storied Exit
Kiffin's exit was marked by significant noise, including his publicized desire to coach Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff and later controversy surrounding his comments about recruiting in a Vanity Fair profile.
Setting the Stage for September
The tension adds a layer of immense intrigue to the upcoming matchup when Kiffin brings the Tigers to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on September 19. For Golding, the environment in Oxford is expected to be electric.
"Going to be a madhouse, an absolute madhouse, and this whole place is ready … been ready," Golding said.
