Philadelphia Eagles’ trade of AJ Brown puts DeVonta Smith in the spotlight
The former Alabama All-American has posted all-star stats while playing with the now-traded wide receiver.
The Philadelphia Eagles officially moved on from a franchise era this week, finalizing a long-rumored trade that sends star wide receiver AJ Brown to the New England Patriots. In exchange, Philadelphia secured a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round draft selection, according to the team's announcement. As the dust settles, all eyes turn to former Alabama All-American DeVonta Smith, who is poised to take center stage in the Eagles' offense.
Proven Consistency
Smith has been a model of reliability for Philadelphia over the last four seasons, racking up 321 receptions for 4,103 yards and 26 touchdowns across 63 regular-season games. According to data compiled by Sports Reference, only eight NFL players—including his former teammate AJ Brown—have hit those statistical marks in the regular season since 2022. While others on that list have garnered significant hardware, such as 20 Pro Bowl nods and eight first-team All-Pro selections, the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner out of Alabama is still hunting for his first NFL Pro Bowl or All-Pro selection.
Postseason Presence
If any doubts remain about Smith's ability to operate as a primary target, his playoff production offers a compelling counter-argument. In nine postseason appearances over the last four years, including two Super Bowl runs, Smith has hauled in 47 catches for 605 yards and two scores. Only Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce can match that postseason output during the same timeframe.
A New Look in Philadelphia
Quarterback Jalen Hurts is familiar with a Smith-led passing attack, recalling the receiver's rookie season where he led the team with 916 yards and five touchdowns. To bolster the corps following Brown's exit, the Eagles have been aggressive, drafting Makai Lemon, trading for Dontayvion Wicks, and adding free agents like Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore. The front office also invested in Vanderbilt's Eli Stowers to pair with tight ends Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra, while veteran Quez Watkins remains on the roster depth chart.
With offensive coordinator Sean Mannion—hired in January—installing his scheme, Hurts expressed confidence in his revamped group. Addressing the media last week, Hurts acknowledged the departure of his teammate while dismissing talk of a personal rift. "Nothing can replace all the greatness that we achieved together," the quarterback noted, adding that he maintains a positive relationship with Brown.
