San Francisco 49ers’ 7-time Pro Bowler: ‘Mac Jones is a glue guy’

After spending a full season in the San Francisco locker room together, seven-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle has high praise for his teammate, Mac Jones. Following a 2025 campaign where they saw significant action on the field together, Kittle is pointing to the former Alabama star as a unique presence in the 49ers' organization.

More Than Just a Backup

Signed as a backup last offseason, Jones was thrust into action for eight games after starter Brock Purdy suffered a toe injury. During an appearance on “The Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams,” Kittle described Jones as a “juice guy” who brings incredible energy to the team. Unlike typical quarterbacks, Kittle views the former All-American as a rare “glue guy” who naturally connects with the entire roster.

“He’s got all the energy in the world, and he loves life,” Kittle said. “He goes everywhere with the boys. You invite him to do anything, he’s there.” Kittle noted that Jones is always ready to support his teammates, whether it is a trip to San Francisco or Vegas, proving he is a dedicated presence on and off the field.

Impact on the Field

Jones’ efforts behind center were pivotal for San Francisco’s postseason run. Kittle noted that the team’s playoff appearance was largely fueled by the four or five games Jones helped win during his stint as the starter. “He works his tail off, does everything he can to play at a high level for the guys... I have nothing but green flags to say about Mac Jones, and he’s a 10 out of 10,” Kittle added.

Despite speculation that his strong relief performances would return him to an NFL lineup via a trade, Jones is back with the 49ers for the second year of his contract. The duo will soon reunite at Tight End University, hosted by Kittle in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 23 through 26.

Looking Ahead

The 49ers finished their regular season 12-5, eventually defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 23-19 in the NFC playoffs before falling to the Seattle Seahawks 41-6. While Kittle continues his recovery from an Achilles tendon tear sustained against the Eagles, he is aiming to be back in action for the 2026 season kickoff this September.
