Second student taken into custody for having a firearm in car at Huntsville school
This is the fourth firearm-related incident in the entire school system
A student at Mae C. Jemison High School was taken into custody on Monday after law enforcement discovered a firearm inside their vehicle on school grounds.
School Safety Protocol
The discovery was made following a tip provided to school officials. Mae C. Jemison High School Principal Dr. Demetris Leverette commended those who brought the concern to light, noting that the proactive report allowed staff to handle the situation quickly and securely. “We are grateful to those who reported concerns, allowing us to act promptly and maintain a safe environment for our students and staff,” Leverette stated. He encouraged the school community to keep utilizing the Anonymous Alerts system or reporting concerns directly to teachers and administrators.
Authorities confirmed that the student was taken into custody immediately, ensuring that there was no disruption to the standard school day. Officials have confirmed that the individual will face significant disciplinary action as outlined by the HCS Code of Conduct and will not be permitted to return to the school.
Rising Concerns Across the District
This incident marks the fourth firearm-related occurrence within the Huntsville City Schools system so far in 2026. According to reporting from 205focus.com, this is also the second time this year that a Mae Jemison student has been caught with a firearm in their vehicle. In addition to these incidents, two other students within the neighboring Madison County School System have also been taken into custody for firearm possession, highlighting an ongoing focus on campus security in the region.
