The real star of Alabama’s World Cup match? Freddy from Germany and his 1 a.m. Buc-ee’s dinner

Among the crowd of more than 88,000 fans who descended on Jordan-Hare Stadium for the Argentina-Iceland World Cup friendly, one German traveler is winning the internet with his authentic Alabama experience.

A Southern Road Trip

The fan, known on X as Freddy, has been sharing his whirlwind American tour with his followers. His journey kicked off on June 5 with a flight into New York, followed by a trip to Atlanta. His itinerary was a quintessential American cultural deep dive: riding MARTA, visiting Taco Bell, exploring the Martin Luther King National Historical Park, and checking out Stranger Things filming locations.

His culinary and travel journey included stops at a Waffle House at 1 a.m., tubing in the Chattahoochee River, and trips through Gainesville and Helen, Georgia. After a quick stop at a Walmart and a view from Lookout Mountain, he headed to Auburn.

The Auburn Experience

Lee County weather threatened to dampen the mood with a Tuesday deluge, but Freddy found hospitality in the form of a helpful hotel receptionist who drove him to the stadium to save him from a long, rainy walk.

Once he arrived at Jordan-Hare, the scale of the venue left him stunned. "This is the craziest stadium I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot of ones," he shared on X. Freddy expressed genuine awe as the sun set over the stadium, calling it the most "The European mind can’t comprehend this" moment of his entire life.

Even the pre-game traditions caught him by surprise. He noted with fascination, "There’s an eagle flying around the stadium." As the match concluded and fireworks lit up the night, he described the entire ordeal as one incredible experience.

Late Night at Buc-ee’s

After a campus tour, the night wasn't over for the traveler. He capped off his Alabama adventure with a 1 a.m. stop at Buc-ee’s, where he could hardly believe his eyes. "DUDE LMAO THIS IS A GAS STATION," he marveled before hitting the road once more.

His infectious enthusiasm for the local culture even grabbed the attention of Gov. Kay Ivey.
