How Alex Mortensen’s strong bond with quarterback Ryder Burton can push UAB in 2026
Junior quarterback fully backs Blazers’ new head coach
Following a period of significant change for the UAB football program, quarterback Ryder Burton has made his stance clear: he is fully committed to the direction set by head coach Alex Mortensen.
A Bond Forged in Transition
The partnership between the two began to solidify during a chaotic stretch last October. Following the dismissal of Trent Dilfer on Oct. 12, the Blazers rallied under interim head coach Alex Mortensen to pull off a stunning upset over No. 22 Memphis. For Burton, that victory was a turning point. Speaking last October, Burton stated, "Whatever decision he makes, I’m going with. And wherever he goes, I go. If he’s here, I’m here. It’s that simple."
That loyalty was reciprocated when Mortensen was named the full-time head coach on Dec. 5. Prioritizing roster retention, Mortensen immediately identified his quarterback as a cornerstone of his program.
Leadership and Culture
In an exclusive interview with 205focus.com, Mortensen praised the impact Burton has had on the locker room. "He brings energy, enthusiasm and intensity on a consistent basis," Mortensen said. "Having him back is really good, but it’s maybe even better because of his ability to affect other people positively. He was a huge priority to get back, and I’m glad we did."
As the Blazers integrate 49 newcomers, including 41 transfers, Burton’s influence has been critical. His vocal communication and on-field intensity have helped maintain consistency throughout spring practices. According to Mortensen, the redshirt junior has essentially become an extension of the coaching staff, helping accelerate the learning curve for the influx of new talent.
Looking Toward the 2026 Season
Entering his fourth year with the program, Mortensen is maintaining the offensive scheme he previously directed as offensive coordinator. For Burton, the stability is a welcome change; this marks his first time remaining at the same school for two consecutive years since high school.
The pressure is on for the offense, which returns only 5% of its rushing production and 7% of its receiving production from a year ago. However, teammates remain confident in their leader. Offensive lineman Calib Perez noted during spring workouts that Burton’s work ethic is infectious, stating, "Football to Ryder is his livelihood. Like he breathes football."
With summer workouts underway, the focus shifts to the season opener. UAB is set to face Illinois on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 8 p.m. CT, with the game broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
