Latest on Aden Holloway’s status with Alabama basketball

As Alabama basketball continues to piece together its roster for the 2026-27 campaign, one significant question remains regarding the status of guard Aden Holloway. While the recent news of Amari Allen removing his name from the NBA draft provided some clarity for the Crimson Tide, Holloway’s future with the program stays in limbo following his arrest and subsequent indictment on felony drug charges.

The Current Outlook

With head coach Nate Oats currently serving as an assistant for the USA basketball U18 national team, Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne recently addressed the situation. Speaking with 205focus.com, Byrne emphasized that any talk regarding a potential return for Holloway is premature.

"Aden still has legal hurdles to overcome," Byrne stated. "If he works those out, there would still be multiple steps before we would consider a plan to allow him the opportunity to officially rejoin the program. Any discussions are too early."

Legal Background

Holloway's legal journey began on March 16, when he was initially charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp. A grand jury later added two misdemeanor charges: illegal possession of prescription drugs and the use or possession of drug paraphernalia. According to court records obtained by 205focus.com, police discovered over two pounds of marijuana in Holloway’s apartment, along with items including packaging materials and Promethazine.

While an arraignment is scheduled for June 16 in Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court, Holloway's attorney, Jason Neff, previously confirmed to 205focus.com that they intend to waive the arraignment and enter a plea of not guilty. Following a student conduct hearing earlier this spring, the initial university suspension was dropped, allowing Holloway to return to campus classes.

Looking Ahead

Oats noted in April that the program has a scholarship open pending the resolution of these matters. During the 2025-26 season, his second with the team, Holloway was a major contributor, appearing in 28 games while averaging 16.8 points per game and shooting an impressive 43.8% from three-point range.
