The real star of Alabama’s World Cup match? Freddy from Germany and his 1 a.m. Buc-ee’s dinner

Among the crowd of over 88,000 spectators who descended on Jordan-Hare Stadium for the Argentina-Iceland World Cup exhibition match, one international traveler’s southern road trip turned into a viral sensation.

Freddy, a German fan documenting his American travels on X, spent his time in the U.S. hitting a variety of cultural touchstones. After arriving in New York on June 5 and connecting through Atlanta, he navigated public transit, visited "Stranger Things" filming locations, toured the Martin Luther King National Historical Park, and made the requisite late-night pilgrimage to Waffle House. His itinerary also included stops in Helen, Georgia—where the German influence felt right at home—tubing on the Chattahoochee, and stops at familiar chains like Taco Bell, Wendy's, and Chili's.

From Lookout Mountain to the Plains

Following a scenic detour through Chattanooga and a stop at Walmart, Freddy arrived in Auburn. Even a heavy Lee County rainstorm couldn't dampen his spirits, largely thanks to the kindness of a local hotel receptionist who provided a ride to the stadium to save the group a walk.

Once inside Jordan-Hare, Freddy was visibly impressed by the atmosphere. He noted his surprise at seeing the eagle flight, and remarked on the stadium itself: "This is the craziest stadium I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot of ones," he shared online.

The scale of the event left a lasting impression on the visitor. Describing the sunset view over the stadium, he wrote, "This is the most ‘The European mind can’t comprehend this’ moment of my life." After taking in the post-match fireworks, he added, "What an experience."

The Buc-ee's Experience

After a campus tour, Freddy capped off his Auburn visit with a cultural rite of passage: a 1 a.m. stop at Buc-ee's. His reaction was pure disbelief: "DUDE LMAO THIS IS A GAS STATION," he marveled before continuing his journey.

His authentic enthusiasm for the local culture even grabbed the attention of Gov. Kay Ivey.
