Tommy Tuberville blames ‘residency hoax’ on Doug Jones being taken over by ‘Marxist mind virus’

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville is moving forward with his gubernatorial bid, signaling a clear path to the November general election after the Alabama Republican Party dismissed a formal challenge regarding his residency. Tuberville is now setting his sights on his Democratic challenger, Doug Jones.

Putting the residency controversy to rest

The Alabama GOP officially ruled on the matter Sunday, with Chairman Scott Stadthagen confirming the party determined Tuberville successfully met the requirement of living in the state for seven years. Tuberville expressed relief that the ordeal is over, labeling the claims a politically motivated "witch hunt."

In a statement released following the committee’s decision, Tuberville said, "I’m thankful for the Committee holding a hearing today to finally put this ridiculous residency hoax to bed." He maintained that his time is spent between his home in Auburn and his property on the coast when he is not working in D.C.

To support his case, the candidate provided tax returns and other documentation, indicating he moved to his Auburn residence in 2018 and registered to vote in 2019.

Shifting focus to the general election

With the residency challenge behind him, Tuberville is intensifying his critique of Jones, whom he defeated in the 2020 Senate race. Tuberville, who previously held the Senate seat currently occupied by the man he beat, argued that his Democratic opponent has shifted further left since his time in office.

"In 2020, I ran against a liberal Doug Jones, but he has since fallen deep into the socialist, Marxist mind virus taking over half of our country," Tuberville said. He invited Jones to debate him, framing the upcoming election as a choice between vastly different visions for Alabama.

Tuberville's platform emphasizes strict opposition to policies he claims are prioritized by the current left, specifically targeting debates on sports, merit-based hiring, and public safety. "Let’s hear Doug talk about men competing in women’s sports, DEI instead of merit-based hiring, child mutilation in the name of ‘transgenderism’, expanded welfare instead of workforce training, or open borders and defunding the police - which he has consistently supported - putting Alabama families at risk," he added. "Alabama’s streets need to be safe."
